These beautifully crafted pieces of art are made with the special skills of the Pijaos Colombian Indians, who over hundreds of years have perfected the technique. In achieving an ideal material for the production of cooking, food storing and serving, the Pijaos created something of worldwide universal appeal evident as long ago as when the first Spanish adventurers visited South America .
This clayware is made from organic products, resulting in 100% safe cooking. Nonstick coatings are not necessary because of the unique satin surface finish of the clay which makes for easy cleaning.
This organic product is safe to use in the oven and on the hob, be it electric, ceramic, Aga/Rayburn type or even the direct flame heat of a gas ring. It is also quite happy under the grill and in the microwave oven. All this plus a beautiful product to display on the dining table gives a special and unique touch whilst the clay's excellent insulating properties maintains the food hotter for longer, making this cookware the ideal product to use in our homes. Machine washing is not recommended but hand wash only due to possible discoloration because of the harsh environment within automatic dish washers.
The clay is extracted from mines located around La Chamba, Chipuelo and El Colegio villages in Colombia . With the use of donkeys and now bicycles and small trucks, the Indians transport the amounts of clay needed for the next batch production use to the workplaces. The clay is dried and converted into powder with the use of a mortar and all the impurities are removed by use of sieves. After that the clay powder is mixed with water to produce a soft and flexible dough ready for use.
The natural clay contains no toxins such as lead and no glazes are applied with the satin finish being achieved as a result of polishing with pebbles You can feel safe and confident using this unique and authentic traditional clay cook/dinnerware.
In an attempt to keep the cost down we import this product directly from the Artisans in Colombia.
